Interview

March 2009

  • What therapies do you practice?
I practise clinical hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy.
  • What does hypnotherapy entail?
Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of clinical hypnosis to create a trance state, which is a state of highly focussed attention, to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the unconscious mind. It is very useful for phobias, smoking cessation, pain control, anxiety, stress, panic attacks and blushing.
  • What does cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy entail?
CBH offers proven techniques for solving problems. Practitioners work closely with their clients, seeking to help uncover their individual set of beliefs that frequently lead to emotional distress. It then offers a variety of methods to help people reformulate their unhealthy beliefs into more realistic and helpful ones. Ultimately, it helps people to develop a philosophy and approach to living that can increase effectiveness and happiness in all areas of life.
  • How long have you practiced?
I began my clinical hypnotherapy training in 2003 and began practising in 2004.
  • Where did you study?
I studied in Glasgow with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis for my certificate, diploma and then my practitioners qualifications in clinical hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy.
  • Where do you practice?
I practice at Life Medicine complementary therapy clinic in the South side, as well as Balance and Grassroots in the West end of Glasgow.
  • Do you do home visits?
No, that's why I offer clinics across Glasgow.
  • Of the therapies that you practice, which one is your favourite?
It's not so much which one is my favourite as opposed to which is the best approach for the client. I find that the more I learn the more I can integrate different approaches into a more dynamic way of working. I love getting to work with people on a whole range of things.
  • Which therapies do you like to receive?
I'm a big fan of deep tissue massage and Indian head massage, both great ways to physically and mentally relax.
  • Is there any therapy you haven’t tried that you are interested in?
I've not tried Reiki yet but would love to learn more about it.
  • What got you interested in becoming a therapist?
I have worked in several different roles dealing with the public and being responsible for the development of staff. From this I became more and more interested in effective communication. This lead me to clinical hypnotherapy and I haven't looked back since. I quickly realised that therapeutic change comes from developing communication and understanding between the therapist and the client.
  • Who inspired or inspires you?
I have worked in several different roles dealing with the public and being responsible for the development of staff. From this I became more and more interested in effective communication. This lead me to clinical hypnotherapy and I haven't looked back since. I quickly realised that therapeutic change comes from developing communication and understanding between the therapist and the client.
  • Looking ahead, what would you like to see for your future?
I would like to get my MSc in clinical hypnotherapy with the Thames Valley University and then start doing some research into the physiological effects of hypnosis. I'd also like to look into other counselling qualifications, building my knowledge base to be a better therapist.
  • Are you studying anything new at present?
    Not at the moment.
  • Are there any other therapies you would like to add to your repertoire?
Apart from those I already mentioned maybe some massage therapies, but only for the benefit of friends and family I think.
